MAY 2023CONSTRUCTIONBUSINESSREVIEW.COM8IN MYOPINIONJake Tucker, a senior project manager at Turner Construction, has a wealth of managerial expertise across a variety of construction sectors, including residential, healthcare, clean rooms, water treatment, civil development, public works, and education. He has experience working with many clients from many multiple jurisdictions and backgrounds and, with a relationship-driven attitude, is able to guide projects from conceptual design through project completion. We would be covering topics of your interest like value engineering, CPM scheduling, project engineering and BIM. So with regards to these areas, are there any new developments that you're observing that you feel you'd like to mention further insights on? What do you feel the direction is that the industry is headed in?In regards to value engineering, we're continuing to see a pretty significant increase in requests for value engineering items. It is mainly due to escalation and supply chain issues in regards to clients not being able to get what they want, when they want, or how much they want. Hence, there's a different value engineering effort, not just strictly on cost, but as these supply chain issues continue to drive schedule, they'll look for alternate products to try to bring in the schedule, thereby reducing costs. So, that's the kind of the big thing with value engineering. I think with the scheduling component of CPM scheduling, we are seeing just different kind of theories and platforms to schedule and to use the CPM schedule, like integration, such as like V planner, and other platforms that are coming out to try to assist the team and things like that, just to understand the schedule, rather than just a typical critical path. So, I think that would be one of the changes that we're seeing. It's just maybe a variety of scheduling platforms and theories being put out there. Then as far as like Project engineering, I think one of the big things with Project engineering is really that the level of complexities have increased, and then the workload is probably increased due to just general resources. One of the big movements that we're seeing, and trying to implement is just working leaner. We try to integrate it with our engineering teams to make their lives easier, and really standardize what we can to really help the cause. Then the last one you mentioned Building Information Modeling, BIM, it has continued to progress through the years, and it's integrated into a lot of the high tech industrial spaces, as well as many of the commercial places in some cases. So, it continues to be a factor and we continue to have to support that with our resources, our virtual design and construction team to ensure that everything is captured. So, the value of BIM is still definitely there. It will continue to mitigate clashes on the field and it's an excellent planning tool. I think BIM has been steady and growing throughout the years. We use a 360 modeling tool that we can bring out into an existing space and we're able to pull a model from that, which is very helpful. So, we've By Jake Tucker, Senior Project Manager, Turner ConstructionCONSTRUCTION SERVICES WITH A FOCUS ON VALUE AND TECHNICAL PROFICIENCY Jake Tucker
