OCTOBER 2022CONSTRUCTIONBUSINESSREVIEW.COM9social fabric is woven into the design of precincts and communities shape the behaviors of the population. White spaces , social spaces, how blocks faces each other , inward look and outward looking block designs , are all part of the social designs on the city. Sustainable and Resiliency Communities Sustainability and Resiliency in designing buildings and cities are norms , but more so for smart cities. These cities by itself should be more productive in the use of resources and produces lesser waste than normal cities. In fact, sustainability cities are more resiliency to climate change , economic changes and other natural or man made challenges . Smart cities are also much more resilient. Resiliency by itself is a big topic but Smart Cities embrace technologies and designs to design out resiliency risk and cater to take the shock of , say, floods and food shortage due to disease or climate change. Resiliency in Government and Industry Models Smart Cities are also much more resiliency to changes in Government models. For instance, when ruling government parties changes, there could be potentially change on government planning rules , launch of projects or even the stalling of projects. Smart Cities would be resiliency to such Government change models because designers will be looking at future proofing their building , township or city design so that any changes in regulations or Governance would not affect these developments greatly. In addition, Smart Cities are also resilient and supportive in the economies that it drives, be it tourism, healthcare and aviation. Smart cities support the sectorial push and enhances its economies with its own support of its own ecology of businesses. Smart Mobility and Use of Urban Robotics Smart Cities would also use much more smart mobility, both in the use of IOT to gather data to drive mobility and the use of natural or assisted mobility to get from place to place. There would be lesser cars on the road, autonomous vehicles will be a norm and data driven use for transport-on-demand will be common place. Imagine, when you go to work, an autonomous vehicle is awaiting because your daily travel routines and sub routines are monitored and programmed into these autonomous vehicles. Its transport on demand. Roads are smaller and there are much more green spaces and green lungs. In addition, there will be a greater use of Urban Robotics such as trash disposal, way finding robots and PMDs. Robots and robotics will be common place. Welcome to the world of iRobot .People Centric and Data Centric Driven Design Lastly, Smart Cities will be driven by People-centric or Data Centric design. This would mean that designs will be affected by data that is collected from our behaviors, actions , movements , patterns and trends. These data will then drive designs in the internal and external space of buildings, communities and townships. Big Data collected on, for instance heat gain, or rain fall will all go into the designs of the drains and roads because the designer would know the limit and threshold of design. Design would be perfected from an art to science because data will drive the effectiveness of what is functional and balanced with what people needs presently and in the future. ConclusionWhat are Smart Cities. Form the descriptions given in the headers, I reiterate my definition of what Smart cities are and what goes into Smart Cities , that is , Really, Smart Cities are a complex amalgamation of different elements from Digital, Sustainability , Resiliency , mobility and robotics , all gelled into a transformative formula that shapes the people's lives and improves the quality of lift in these cities. We should also not forget that these cities are economically resilient and are great cities to live in, always high on the sustainability index or livable cities list for cities. SJ is proud to design such sustainable cities. A city that uses people centric data and big data to drive buildings and master planning to incorporate the advancements of sustainability, resiliency, mobility and robotics for a heightened experience of the quality of life by the city inhabitants
