Engineering Retractable Roof Systems for Long-Term Performance
Cabrio Structures

Unpredictable weather has long limited how outdoor spaces perform, turning patios, event venues, and recreational facilities into inconsistent, seasonal assets. Retractable roof systems offer a solution, but they are difficult to design and execute correctly, leading to operational failures.

Cabrio Structures combines proven design expertise with advanced structural engineering to create retractable roof systems engineered for reliable, year-round performance across diverse climates and demanding outdoor environments.

Each system is configured around how the space is intended to operate. Cabrio draws on its experience across retractable structures, enclosures and large-span systems to identify configurations proven to perform reliably over time.

The combination of design clarity and execution expertise allows operators to move beyond weather-dependent usage. Restaurants can maintain year-round operations, support advance bookings with confidence and convert variability into a predictable revenue stream.

“Unpredictable weather is a reality everywhere. We turn that unpredictability into an operational advantage our customers can control and benefit from,” says Kent H. Forsland, owner and founder.
Engineering for Long-Term Reliability

Cabrio’s work is shaped by two persistent challenges in retractable roofing systems—environmental variability and long-term structural reliability. Wind loads, thermal movement, and moisture intrusion can compromise panel alignment and performance over time, while moving assemblies and structural connections are subject to wear, fatigue, and failure. As a result, many retractable systems are eventually fixed in place because they can no longer maintain reliable operation.

Unpredictable weather is a reality everywhere. We turn that unpredictability into an operational advantage our customers can control and benefit from.

Cabrio addresses these issues through a consistent engineering approach across all product lines. Each structure is designed to withstand real environmental loads, including snow accumulation and wind pressure, without requiring customers to manually manage structural stress or snow removal.

“We spend a lot of time understanding what will actually work not just on day one, but years down the line,” says Forsland. “The goal is not to experiment on a job site. It is to deliver solutions that perform exactly as expected over time.”

Preloaded stainless steel tension rods place the structure under controlled compression, reducing material deflection while eliminating the need for cross bracing, cables and additional reinforcement. Internal joint locking systems secure structural connections from within, preventing loosening over time and distributing loads evenly across the frame.

The patented synchronized drive system follows the same reliability-focused philosophy. It maintains synchronized movement throughout the structure, reducing mechanical strain and preventing uneven operation that can lead to premature failure. The result is structural integrity, operational reliability and consistent performance across repeated use cycles.

The same engineering philosophy extends to installation and project execution. Elimination of welding requirements and reduced on-site assembly shorten installation timelines and allow projects to move from construction to operation quickly, particularly in constrained urban environments and large-span applications. Every project is structurally engineered and stamped according to the environmental conditions of its location, reinforcing long-term accountability and performance.

A Continuum of Solutions

As retractable roofing systems become common across commercial and hospitality environments, many architects, contractors and owners still face a steep learning curve around long-term system performance. Design decisions are often made without a clear understanding of how these structures will respond to changing environmental conditions over time.

Cabrio reduces this uncertainty through proven configurations, project-specific guidance and design approaches grounded in real operating environments. The focus remains on long-term system performance rather than short-term installation requirements.

Its retractable roof systems are designed to manage how a space responds to changing conditions, whether the application involves a compact residential setting or a large-scale commercial structure spanning more than 100 feet. That same project-specific approach extends across Cabrio’s range of solutions.

CabrioEnclosure expands Cabrio’s portfolio with an all-aluminum alternative to its traditional steel-framed retractable roof systems. It introduces full-space adaptability through an integrated system where the roof and walls operate together, allowing the entire structure to open or close in response to variations in weather.

  • We are always asking how we can provide more value than expected. That comes from really understanding the problem and then designing something that solves it in a way that lasts.

The system is particularly effective for swimming pools, hospitality environments and enclosed spaces that require consistent environmental control. Structurally, it supports clear spans exceeding 100 feet through a patented stainless steel rod system and a proprietary ‘hurricane wedge’ feature, eliminating the need for welding, cables and diagonal supports. Large-scale projects such as water parks and sports facilities gain both structural and operational advantages from these wide clear-span capabilities while faster installation timelines allow facilities to become operational sooner.

In Chicagoland, Cabrio installed a custom CabrioEnclosure system at Chez Hotel’s rooftop patio, transforming the space into an all-season hospitality destination for dining, private events and corporate gatherings. The system allows the rooftop to maintain an open-air feel during warmer months while providing protection and operational continuity through winter. Increased year-round usability has also expanded the venue’s event capacity.

CabrioFlex builds on the CabrioEnclosure system by separating the operation of the roof and walls, creating a more responsive environment where exposure can be adjusted throughout the day. A restaurant can block the wind on one side while keeping the roof open, or close the roof during light rain without losing airflow. The level of control allows spaces to remain usable without sacrificing the open-air experience that customers expect.

Cabrio is also developing a product for luxury residential applications—CabrioLux—comprising a fully insulated retractable roof over a rectangular glass roof. The system allows users to shift between insulated comfort, filtered daylight and full outdoor exposure without compromising usability or comfort.

When both layers are closed, the space functions as a fully conditioned indoor environment. Its insulated retractable roof systems meet energy code requirements while supporting heating and cooling performance.

When both layers are open, natural light flows in.

The emphasis on architectural integration extends beyond the roof system itself. Cabrio is the only retractable roofing solution provider to offer eave overhangs that support architectural styles such as prairie-style homes.

For projects where flexibility is not required, CabrioFixed provides a structurally robust, non-moving solution that prioritizes long-term durability, clean architectural alignment and engineered performance. These systems are built to handle real environmental loads, ensuring that stability is maintained over time.

In Detroit, The Rooftop at Gilly’s demonstrates how CabrioFixed can support large hospitality environments while maintaining openness and year-round usability. Featuring a CabrioFixed roof, the space incorporates a glass ceiling and retractable doors leading to a rooftop terrace with views of Detroit’s historic skyline throughout the year.

Direct sales and partnerships with local installation companies allow it to maintain competitive pricing and high design flexibility. A 20-year limited warranty, concealed hardware and superior fit and finish further differentiate Cabrio from competitors.

A Measured Approach to Innovation

Cabrio builds innovation around real project requirements. It studies customer objectives, site constraints, and environmental factors before developing a solution. The process often leads to new designs and patents focused on solving specific problems.

“We are always asking how we can provide more value than expected,” says Forsland. “That comes from really understanding the problem and then designing something that solves it in a way that lasts.”

In a rapidly changing market, Cabrio remains focused on delivering solutions that perform reliably under real operating conditions. Cabrio transforms weather-sensitive spaces into dependable, revenue-generating environments that support year-round use and consistent guest comfort.

Cabrio’s combination of structural engineering, operational reliability, and project-specific design has earned the company recognition as Retractable Roof Systems Manufacturer of the Year 2026.

Deep Dive

Designing Predictable Performance in Retractable Roof Systems

Investment in retractable roof systems has shifted from architectural novelty to a strategic decision tied directly to revenue continuity, space utilization and customer experience. In construction environments where timelines, compliance and lifecycle performance carry financial consequences, decision-makers are no longer evaluating these systems on visual appeal alone. They are assessing whether a structure will perform consistently across seasons, integrate cleanly into complex builds and avoid costly retrofits that arise from design misjudgments. A recurring challenge in this space stems from the relative immaturity of retractable roof adoption. Many owners, contractors and design professionals lack deep familiarity with how these systems behave over time. This gap often leads to installations that function well initially but degrade into fixed structures due to flawed engineering or impractical design assumptions. A roof that cannot reliably open years after installation undermines the entire investment, turning a dynamic asset into a static liability. Execution certainty therefore becomes central. Buyers must prioritize partners who demonstrate not only conceptual design capability but also a proven understanding of what will function predictably over decades. This includes clarity on structural behavior under environmental stress, confidence in span capabilities without intrusive supports and the ability to deliver solutions that do not rely on ongoing manual intervention to remain viable. Systems that demand frequent operational workarounds introduce risk that most commercial operators cannot absorb. Equally important is the level of environmental control a system enables. In sectors such as hospitality, recreation or mixed-use development, the value of a retractable roof lies in its ability to modulate conditions rather than simply open or close. Flexibility in managing wind, precipitation and temperature exposure allows operators to extend usable hours and maintain consistent user experience. Solutions that treat the roof and enclosure as a coordinated system, rather than isolated components, tend to offer greater control and adaptability across varied conditions. This level of control also supports design creativity, enabling spaces to serve multiple purposes without structural compromise. Project efficiency and economic viability also shape decision criteria. Long installation timelines, complex on-site fabrication or dependence on specialized labor can delay revenue generation and inflate costs. Buyers increasingly favor systems that streamline construction through prefabrication, reduce site complexity and align with faster deployment schedules. At the same time, lifecycle considerations like structural integrity, warranty coverage and long-term maintenance requirements influence total cost far more than initial pricing alone. Decisions made at the specification stage often determine whether a project delivers sustained value or introduces recurring operational friction. Within this context, Cabrio Structures represents a highly suitable and strategically sound choice for organizations prioritizing long-term reliability and design flexibility in retractable roof systems. It combines structurally engineered designs that eliminate the need for manual load management with clear-span capabilities exceeding 100 feet, removing the need for intrusive supports while maintaining performance integrity. Its dual approach, offering both integrated enclosure systems and independent roof-and-wall configurations, enables tailored environmental control across diverse applications, from hospitality venues to large-scale recreational facilities. The company’s patented drive mechanisms and emphasis on precision design contribute to consistent functionality over time, while its direct-to-client model supports cost efficiency and adaptable project execution.  ...Read more

Q1

What Should Buyers Expect from Retractable Roof System Manufacturers?

Buyers should expect more than a movable cover. Retractable Roof System Manufacturers need to understand the structure, climate exposure, drainage, controls and how a space earns its return. A poor early specification can leave a venue with a roof that opens on day one but becomes difficult to use after repeated weather cycles. Strong providers design around wind, snow, moisture and daily use, then make installation practical enough for contractors and owners to plan around.

Q2

How Does Cabrio Structures Approach Long-Term Roof Performance?

Weather-sensitive patios, pools and event spaces fail when movement, load paths and joints are treated as afterthoughts. Cabrio Structures addresses those risks through preloaded stainless steel tension rods, internal joint-locking systems, and a patented synchronized drive system that keeps movement aligned across the structure. Retractable Roof System Manufacturers in this field must also account for local conditions; they have projects structurally engineered and stamped for the snow, wind and site demands of each location.

Q3

What Problems Do Adaptable Roof and Wall Systems Solve?

Adaptable roofs and enclosures help owners make better use of outdoor spaces without worrying that changing weather will disrupt operations. Retractable Roof System Manufacturers support restaurants, pools and recreational venues by giving operators the ability to adjust coverage as conditions change, rather than choosing between a space that is always open or always enclosed. The best systems allow natural light and fresh air to flow when the weather is pleasant, then provide shelter when rain, wind or temperature shifts arrive. This flexibility can help protect reservations, extend seasonal use and keep spaces productive for more hours throughout the year.

Q4

Why Do Clear Spans and Installation Methods Matter?

Large outdoor spaces lose value when posts, braces or lengthy site work get in the way. Retractable Roof System Manufacturers must balance structural strength with open sightlines, especially in hospitality and recreation settings where the sense of space matters. Clear-span designs can reduce visual clutter, while fewer welds, cables and supports can simplify installation. Buyers should also ask how the roof will be maintained and kept operating smoothly over time.

Q5

What Makes Cabrio Structures Relevant for Complex Outdoor Projects?

Complex projects need roof systems that adapt to the building rather than forcing the building to adapt to them. Cabrio Structures developed CabrioEnclosure as an all-aluminum system that integrates roof and wall operation, with clear spans exceeding 100 feet, supported by a patented stainless-steel rod system and a proprietary hurricane wedge. Its CabrioFlex system allows roofs and walls to move independently, enabling a restaurant to block wind on one side while keeping the roof open. Retractable Roof System Manufacturers create the most value when this kind of flexibility is built into the design from the start.

Q6

How Should Owners Compare Manufacturers Before Specifying a System?

Owners should test claims against real use cases. Ask how the system handles snow loads, wind pressure, moisture intrusion, thermal movement, service access and repeated opening cycles. Retractable Roof System Manufacturers should be able to explain warranty terms, hardware exposure, controls, installation needs and what happens when a site has unusual span or architectural requirements. A good comparison looks beyond the brochure and assesses how the roof will perform over years of weather, maintenance and daily use.
