For developers and general contractors (GCs) of cold storage facilities, a well-designed refrigeration system enhances operations and adds to the customer experience. Elevating the experience are solutions tailored to their needs, whether turnkey or modular systems that enhance operational efficiency.

This is what ColonialWebb, one of the largest industrial and commercial mechanical and electrical contractors in the U.S. Mid-South, delivers with its expertise and innovation. It offers customized solutions designed to meet each client’s requirements across construction, building service, industrial refrigeration, and manufacturing. It handles the various related aspects of refrigeration, including electrical, mechanical, design, service and process safety management (PSM) to meet the needs of GCs in the cold storage sector.

Building on the foundations and financial backing of its parent company, Comfort Systems USA, ColonialWebb is at the forefront of advancing cold storage construction with a proven track record. Fueling its capabilities is its seasoned engineering team, which has over 60 years of combined experience.

“We offer expertise in speculative and design-built facilities with a specialization in industrial refrigeration, serving as a one-stop shop for general contractors in cold storage construction,” says Andrew Eversole, general manager of industrial refrigeration at ColonialWebb.

Historically focused on serving end users in the food and beverage industry, the company is presently committed to broadening its reach by forging partnerships with developers and general contractors in the cold storage sector.

While the company offers traditional installation methods, ColonialWebb is increasingly transitioning to modular systems—where refrigeration units are prefabricated off-site for faster installation on-site—to better align with clients’ evolving demands.

The ColonialWebb team initiates client engagement early in the design phase. During the conceptual stage, it collaborates with owners, general contractors and other relevant stakeholders to explore various refrigeration system options using freon, ammonia and CO2.

After assessing the benefits of each system, the company works closely with the client’s architectural team to optimize the building layout for refrigeration purposes. Once the layout is finalized, it develops the complete design of the refrigeration system in collaboration with the architects, mechanical and electrical design groups and structural teams. Upon receiving approval for the design, ColonialWebb begins the installation phase.

Over the years, ColonialWebb has scripted many success stories. One that stands out is a recent achievement—a 1.2 million square feet project for World-Class Distributors, a renowned logistics company that supports a well-known high-end grocery chain. The grocery chain wanted to enter the cold storage market and the ColonialWebb team assisted them in winning the customers trust to get awarded the project. Less than seven months later, phase one was running and in full operation.

Leveraging its in-house engineering, 3D modeling, fabrication shop, PSM and construction expertise, ColonialWebb managed the design, installation, and PSM services to the client on an accelerated schedule. Presently, ColonialWebb is responsible for operating and maintaining the refrigeration system, with dedicated service technicians present on-site for 40 hours a week to ensure smooth operation and manage all PSM maintenance tasks.

In another successful project the company also undertook a project for Liberty University, where it teamed up to provide a modular ammonia system to replace an outdated R22 refrigeration system at an ice skating rink. The conversion significantly enhanced efficiency while meeting the university's requirements.

ColonialWebb operates autonomously while harnessing the resources of its parent organization, Comfort Systems USA, to strengthen its purchasing and bonding capabilities. It exemplifies its four core values of Safety, Integrity, Empathy and Urgency—evident in its impressive experience modification rate (EMR) of 0.45.

ColonialWebb's innovative approach to cold storage solutions is reshaping industry standards. Focused on quality, versatility and client satisfaction, it is poised for sustained leadership in the industrial refrigeration sector.
