Columbus Hardscapes
Crafting Outdoor Living Without Compromise

Columbus Hardscapes

Rob Hewitt, Columbus Hardscapes | Construction Business Review | Hardscaping and Landscaping Services Company of the YearRob Hewitt, Owner and President
Columbus Hardscapes has emerged as one of Central Ohio’s premier outdoor living design-build firms, transforming residential properties into fully integrated environments that extend the comfort, functionality and beauty of the home beyond its walls.

Known for its custom patios, outdoor kitchens, pools, pavilions, fireplaces and landscape lighting systems, the company approaches each project as a cohesive experience rather than a collection of individual features. Premium stonework, thoughtful design and Amish-built structures form the foundation of spaces designed to serve families for decades.

The company’s story begins with owner and president Rob Hewitt, who entered the industry as a teenager mowing lawns and maintaining residential properties. Those early years provided firsthand insight into how people interact with their outdoor spaces and how thoughtful design can influence the way families gather, entertain and create memories.

After earning a degree in business management with a minor in marketing and public relations, Hewitt continued growing the company. When the 2008 recession altered the residential services market, he recognized an opportunity to evolve.

As traditional maintenance work declined, Columbus Hardscapes expanded into hardscape construction and landscape installation. The shift not only helped the business navigate a difficult economic period but also laid the groundwork for its transformation into a full-service outdoor living design-build company.

Today, the firm manages projects ranging from elegant patio installations to million-dollar backyard transformations. Clients work with a single team from concept through completion, benefiting from integrated design, architectural planning, construction management and long-term property stewardship.

The company’s growth reflects a broader shift in homeowner priorities. Outdoor spaces are no longer viewed as seasonal amenities but as year-round extensions of the home, designed for entertaining, relaxation and everyday living.

Columbus Hardscapes also carries forward a respected local legacy through the continuation of Lindsay Wright, a Columbus-area hardscape company founded in 1987. The acquisition strengthened the firm’s regional presence while preserving a longstanding commitment to craftsmanship and quality.

Designed Around the Way People Live

Every project begins with a simple question: How will the space be used?

At this point, we have seven people on our management team who have owned their own businesses. They bring different skill sets and viewpoints and that’s been critical to our growth and our ability to consistently deliver for clients.

The design team explores how clients entertain, how many people they host, whether they envision year-round use and how the space should connect to the architecture of the home. Sightlines, privacy considerations, circulation patterns and future maintenance requirements are evaluated before a final design is developed.

“When we say we put a masterpiece under your feet, we mean that we approach every project as a fully integrated outdoor living space,” says Hewitt. “A patio can be just a product, but a masterpiece is an experience. It should feel cohesive, functional and like it was always meant to be there.”

That philosophy drives every phase of the design process. Gathering spaces are balanced with private retreats. Covered structures incorporate heating, airflow and lighting systems. Fire features, utilities and infrastructure are planned early to ensure seamless integration throughout the finished environment.

Behind the aesthetics lies equally rigorous engineering.

Drainage systems, soil conditions, grading requirements and structural loads are carefully analyzed before construction begins. The company believes long-term performance is determined as much by what homeowners never see as by the finished appearance they enjoy every day.

Premium materials and Amish-built structures are selected not only for their visual appeal but also for their durability and longevity. Every detail is designed to withstand the demands of Ohio’s climate while maintaining its beauty over time.

To protect that investment, Columbus Hardscapes offers structured maintenance programs that help preserve the performance and appearance of each project long after installation is complete.

“An outdoor living space is an asset,” Hewitt says. “And every asset requires asset management.”

Listening First, Building Second

For many homeowners, an outdoor project represents one of the largest investments they will make after purchasing their home. Columbus Hardscapes approaches that responsibility with a consultative mindset.

“Our approach is never about selling more,” says Hewitt. “It’s about helping clients understand the full picture.”

That philosophy often leads to solutions that go far beyond what clients initially envision.

  • When we say we put a masterpiece under your feet, we mean that we approach every project as a fully integrated outdoor living space. A patio can be just a product, but a masterpiece is an experience. It should feel cohesive, functional and like it was always meant to be there.

In one project, a family approached the company seeking a new outdoor gathering space. During conversations, the team learned their daughter was undergoing intensive medical treatment and could not regulate her body temperature, preventing her from comfortably spending time outdoors with her sisters.

Rather than simply designing a patio, Columbus Hardscapes created a pavilion equipped with integrated heating and ceiling fans, allowing the entire family to enjoy the space together throughout the year.

The result was not driven by a product catalog or standard package. It emerged from listening carefully and designing around the family’s specific needs.

Built on Experience

Delivering projects of this scale requires more than technical expertise. It requires leadership, communication and accountability.

“At this point, we have seven people on our management team who have owned their own businesses,” says Hewitt. “They bring different skill sets and viewpoints and that’s been critical to our growth and our ability to consistently deliver for clients.”

Most of the company’s expansion has come through referrals and repeat business, reflecting the trust it has earned throughout Central Ohio.

Looking ahead, Columbus Hardscapes has plans to develop a dedicated design center as part of its long-term growth strategy. Envisioned within the next three to five years, the facility will provide an enhanced environment for client collaboration, project visualization and design planning.

What began as a lawn-mowing operation has evolved into a company dedicated to creating places where families gather, celebrate milestones and build lasting memories. Whether centered around a fire feature on a quiet weeknight or beneath a pavilion hosting generations of family and friends, every project is designed with the same objective: creating outdoor spaces that enrich everyday life.

That commitment to craftsmanship, design excellence and client experience is what earned Columbus Hardscapes Construction Business Review’s Hardscaping and Landscaping Services Company of the Year award.

Deep Dive

What Distinguishes Leading Hardscaping and Landscaping Service Firms

Outdoor environments have moved beyond simple backyard improvements and now play a central role in how residential properties are used and valued. Homeowners increasingly expect exterior spaces to function as natural extensions of the home rather than decorative additions. Property owners therefore face a more complex evaluation challenge when selecting hardscaping and landscaping services. The right partner must combine design insight, disciplined construction practices, and an understanding of how families actually use outdoor space over time. Hardscaping decisions influence how property owners live day to day. Patios, walkways, kitchens, pools, and gathering areas must integrate naturally with the home’s architecture and surrounding environment. A project that looks impressive in isolation may still fall short if it disrupts how people move through the space, limits usability or fails to reflect the lifestyle of the household. Leading providers begin by examining how outdoor areas will be used in practice. Conversations typically explore hosting habits, seasonal usage patterns, and how the space should connect to indoor living areas. This approach allows the design to reflect everyday behavior rather than abstract visual concepts. Strong firms also demonstrate the ability to translate those insights into coherent spatial planning. Outdoor living areas that function well usually incorporate layered environments that support multiple activities simultaneously. Seating areas for conversation, open areas for gatherings and sheltered spaces for shade or weather protection create a setting that adapts throughout the day and across seasons. Strategic placement decisions also matter. Cooking areas should keep hosts connected to guests while pool areas should maintain clear visibility from seating areas or the home itself. Projects that achieve this sense of integration tend to feel natural rather than constructed. Long-term performance remains another critical factor for decision makers. Hardscape installations represent significant investments and are expected to endure for decades. Engineering methods, drainage planning, and construction discipline determine whether surfaces remain stable or begin to degrade after several seasons. Thoughtful installation also ensures that lighting, heating elements and other supporting systems can extend usability into evening hours or cooler months. Outdoor environments that remain functional for much of the year deliver far greater value than those that sit unused for extended periods. A further distinction among leading service providers lies in how they guide clients through design decisions. Many homeowners approach projects with limited awareness of how certain features can influence the experience of the space. Skilled developers provide clear explanations that allow clients to understand why particular elements improve safety, comfort or usability. Lighting systems illustrate this dynamic well. Carefully placed fixtures improve visibility, highlight architectural details and extend the usefulness of outdoor areas long after sunset. Guidance focused on outcomes rather than upselling tends to build stronger trust throughout the project lifecycle. Strong organizational culture also contributes to consistent project execution. Firms that place experienced professionals in roles aligned with their expertise often deliver more reliable results. Teams that include professionals with varied construction or business backgrounds can approach challenges from multiple perspectives while maintaining a shared commitment to quality. Word-of-mouth referrals frequently become the primary growth driver for companies that consistently deliver thoughtful design and dependable craftsmanship. Columbus Hardscapes reflects these qualities in practice. The company approaches projects as fully integrated outdoor living environments rather than isolated installations. Its process begins with understanding how homeowners plan to use the space, allowing design decisions to reflect real household routines, and entertainment patterns. Projects frequently incorporate elements such as outdoor kitchens, fireplaces, pools and lighting systems arranged to create cohesive gathering areas that connect naturally with the home’s architecture. The company also emphasizes long-term value by engineering installations intended to endure while offering maintenance programs that help protect those investments after construction. This combination of thoughtful design, disciplined construction and ongoing stewardship positions Columbus Hardscapes as a strong option for homeowners and organizations evaluating high-quality hardscaping and landscaping services. ...Read more
