Thank you for Subscribing to Construction Business Review Weekly Brief
This article is based on an interview with Kelvin Hon, general manager at ISG, Singapore.
As the general manager at ISG, what according to you are some international trends or practices that you believe could positively influence the construction industry in Singapore and the broader region?
I can share some general trends and practices internationally that had positively influenced the construction industry noting our industry is dynamic and consistently adaptive to changes around us:
Net carbon zero and Sustainability
Tackling climate change is a top priority on our agenda at ISG. Action taken to limit carbon emissions in the next decade will be critical for the future, which is why we within the construction industry must work together to find ways to cut the carbon we produce. We are keen to create solutions to encourage users to return to a physical built environment, and thereby supporting the growth of a vibrant society. Singapore plans to overhaul the financial services sector by 2025 to support its fight against climate change and will be mobilizing capital to support sustainable financing and green fintech. ISG has since initiated building processes with new tools to incorporate improved methodologies in construction, to support all efforts working towards Singapore 2030 Green Plan.
Digitalization and Building Information Modeling (BIM):
The use of advanced technologies like BIM & REVIT can facilitate project coordination, reduces errors, and improves efficiency. At ISG we’ve been promoting the use of digital phone applications in our construction processes, including the ability for end users to use personal devices to scan QR codes to download and view 3D drawings, and a unique application platform to track rectification of snags or defects within a project.
Modular Construction:
Prefabrication and modular construction methods can speed up project delivery, reduce costs, and minimize disruption to the surrounding environment. This trend aligns with Singapore's focus on innovation and efficiency
Smart Nation and Internet of Things Integration:
The integration of Internet of Things (IoT) devices in construction projects can improve monitoring, maintenance, and overall efficiency. ISG has recently completed commercial and retail spaces within Singapore, where we have installed IoT devices across the projects where the end user preferences and usage are closely monitored and thereby resulting in improved energy efficiency and effective resource allocation for clients.
1. On par with the evolving construction industry, what emerging technologies do you believe will have the most significant impact on the sector?
The local construction industry is experiencing a significant shift with the integration of various emerging technologies. These technologies have the potential to improve efficiency, safety, and promote sustainability. The following are reiterations to what I have described above as likely to have a significant impact on the construction sector-
Building Information Modeling (BIM):
BIM is a 3D modeling facilitates better collaboration, conduct clash detections early on during design and drawing stages, reduces errors, and improves project management.
3D Scan to BIM:
When we refer to Scan to BIM, it is the process and series of steps that we implement to get an actual representation of the existing conditions of a project.
A 3D laser scanning device is used to capture the existing conditions, the scanned data is in the form of “Points” when millions of such points are combined together and imported into a 3D Modeling platform with the purpose of creating an As-built model.
Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR):
AR and VR technologies are being used for virtual walkthroughs, safety training, and project visualization. These technologies can enhance design communication, improve training programs, and provide a more immersive experience for stakeholders. Virtual walk throughs and 3D perspectives are utilised in our presentation and pitch to clients showcasing methodologies and processes for more complex.
2. The construction industry relies on a skilled workforce. With the changing landscape, what strategy implementation can help attract, develop, and retain talent with the necessary skills to meet industry demands?
Attracting, developing, and retaining a skilled workforce is crucial for the success of any construction company, especially considering the changing landscape and lack of entrants into the local construction industry here. Here are some strategies we can implement to help attract, develop and retain talent in an ever-dynamic economic landscape-
Training & Development Programs:
Develop in house training programs that align with industry needs including collaborating with external institutions to formalise a development programme for employees.
Digital Skills Training:
With the increasing digitization of the construction industry, invest in training programs that enhance digital literacy and proficiency in construction technologies.
Internship and On Job Training Programs:
Establish internship programs that allow students to gain practical skills while working under experienced professionals.
Career Development Opportunities:
Provide clear paths for career advancement within the organization. We at ISG has been known to offer professional development opportunities, mentorship programs across geographical boundaries for young talents to develop, and support for obtaining additional certifications or qualifications.
Diversity and Inclusion:
In today’s world, we are seen as a global workforce rather than working in siloes of genders, ethnicities, and backgrounds. ISG has always been inculcating a diverse and inclusive workplace that welcomes individuals from various experiences and communities.
Safety Culture:
We always prioritize and invest in a strong safety culture within the organisation. Construction can be a hazardous industry, and a commitment to safety will enhance employee’s morale and attract professionals who prioritize a safe working environment.
Employee Engagement and Communication:
Fostering a positive and engaging work culture, with regular communication of organizational goals, project successes, and the impact of individual contributions are Musts in a construction firm. We encourage open communication channels between senior leadership, line managers and employees such that we conduct an annual Bheard survey organised by a third-party operator for all employees to give & gather feedback without being named, and thereby helps senior managers to constantly keep close to the pulse on the ground.
"Sustainable construction not only aligns with global trends but can also lead to cost savings, improved reputation, and compliance with environmental regulations."
Flexible Work Arrangements:
Since the pandemic, we do offer flexible work arrangements, such as remote work options or flexible scheduling, to attract a diverse range of professionals and accommodate various work preferences. This set-up fosters trust between leadership and their co-workers, and not forgetting this can mean loyalty between all parties in the long run.
3. On an ending note, what is your advice for other senior leaders and CXOs working in the construction sector?
Certainly, for senior leaders and CXOs working in the construction sector, here are some two cents worth from myself as part of a wider sharing:
To embrace Innovation and stay aware of emerging technologies in the construction industry. Encourage the business to adopt digitalisation and innovation in order to improve project efficiency, sustainability, and overall competitiveness.
Prioritize the development of your company’s workforce. Invest in training programs, mentorship initiatives, and ongoing education to ensure that your team has the skillsets needed for the changing demands of the industry.
To incorporate sustainable practices into your projects. Sustainable construction not only aligns with global trends but can also lead to cost savings, improved reputation, and compliance with environmental regulations.
To place a strong emphasis on safety. Safety not only protects your workforce but also contributes to project efficiency by minimizing accidents and disruptions.
Implement robust risk management strategies. Construction projects inherently involve risks, and a proactive approach to risk identification and mitigation is crucial for project.
Embracing change, focusing on digitalisation in their processes, and nurturing a collaborative and safety-conscious culture, senior leaders and CXOs can lead their organizations to thrive in a rapidly changing construction landscape.
