Fremont, CA: Concrete plays a crucial role in the US's infrastructure. Unfortunately, much of it is not well-maintained. Issues that have not been addressed for a long time can lead to prolonged closures for extensive repairs.
The American Society of Civil Engineers has done intensive research on the extent of the issues and published its 2021 Report Card for America's Infrastructure. They gave it a D grade. Alongside, they noted that 43 percent of the country's road network is in mediocre to poor condition.
Nevertheless, researchers think smart concrete can help in addressing the infrastructure shortcomings. Smart concrete falls into two separate categories. The first type includes concrete additives that make the material more sturdy, help in carbon capture, as well as offer many other benefits that are not present in conventional concrete.
