Sustainable construction emphasises eco-friendly materials like bamboo, recycled plastics, laminated timber, and stone to reduce environmental impact and promote a greener built environment.
FREMONT, CA: Integrated sustainable materials are transforming the Asia-Pacific construction industry. As the region grapples with rapid urbanisation, population growth, and the urgent need to address environmental concerns, construction practices are evolving at an unprecedented pace. These innovative sustainable materials, encompassing a wide range of technologies and eco-friendly alternatives, are reshaping the landscape of construction in APAC. They promise to enhance the structural integrity and energy efficiency of buildings and also hold the key to reducing the industry's carbon footprint, ultimately paving the way for a more sustainable and resilient future in the region.
Some of the most innovative sustainable materials transforming APAC construction include:
Recycled concrete: Recycled concrete is made using recycled concrete aggregates (RCA), which are the crushed remains of old concrete structures. RCA can replace up to 100% of the natural aggregates used in traditional concrete, which can significantly reduce the environmental impact of concrete production.
Geopolymer concrete: The geopolymer concrete system uses industrial byproducts instead of cement, such as fly ash and blast furnace slag, to bind the concrete. Geopolymer concrete has a lower carbon footprint than traditional concrete and is also more resistant to fire and chemicals.
Cross-laminated timber (CLT): CLTs are engineered wood products created by glueing layers of wood together at right angles. CLT is a strong and durable material that can be used to build a wide range of structures, including multi-story buildings. CLT has a low carbon footprint and is also a renewable resource.
Bamboo: Bamboo is a rapidly growing and renewable resource that can be used to produce a wide range of construction materials, including flooring, beams, and panels.
