In addition to galvanized steel, copper, aluminum, and tin, metal roofing products can be composed of a variety of metals. Metal roofs have many advantages, but there are also some disadvantages to consider.
Interestingly, one of the main fears people have about metal roofs is unfounded: Metal roofs attract lightning.
Lighting and roofs made of metal: The misconception that metal roofs attract lightning probably stems from the fact that metal is a good conductor of electricity, so people assume that a metal roof will attract lightning. Lightning usually strikes whatever object is highest in the area that has an uninterrupted path to the ground when it strikes, as it is seeking a path to the ground. Lighting cannot strike the metal roof because it is not grounded.
