Digital transformation in the construction industry is crucial as it considers the shift in operations and interactions between construction companies and other parties involved.

FREMONT, CA: Traditionally, a digital transformation would include only the invention of new digital business models, IT modernisation, and digital optimisation. In the construction industry, however, the definition also includes making use of new, innovative solutions that better the effectiveness and efficiency of the industry.

The transformations now should also consider the shift in the operations and interactions of construction companies with their clients, regulatory bodies, and suppliers. It should also comprise the utilisation of digital communication tools, such as BIM softwares, and the adoption of collaborative processes.

A successful digital transformation has three key pillars.

Technology: This aspect focuses on the platforms and tools necessary to attain the desired outcome. Businesses should identify the technology suitable for their objectives and once it is chosen, organisations must possess the required infrastructure and support to implement and maintain the technology.

Processes: This factor focuses on the implementation of optimised workflows and business processes, such that a reduction in errors, an increase in efficiency, and improved outcomes can be achieved. Organisations must perform an overhaul of their processes to recognise inefficiencies and also identify areas where implementing technologies can improve the productivity of the company. To leverage such technologies to their full capacity, an organisation must redesign and restructure all of its current processes.

People: This component centres more on the knowledge, skills, and culture necessary to adopt and implement new processes and technologies. Any type of digital transformation necessitates a shift in mindset, and people who are required to work with the technologies and the processes are at the centre of any transformation.
