With the globe shifting towards a greener future, businesses on the construction horizon are opting for definite measures that promote sustainability in the construction process.

FREMONT, CA: Resource consumption and environmental issues have historically been intertwined with the construction industry. Nevertheless, the urgent imperative to address climate change and promote responsible resource utilisation has catalysed a noticeable shift towards sustainability in recent times. As a result of this transformative paradigm, a myriad of trends have surfaced, all aimed at enhancing sustainability within the building sector. These progressive advancements are revolutionising the approach to building design, construction, and operation. They encompass innovative green building techniques as well as the widespread adoption of renewable energy sources.

Green building certifications, such as LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) and BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method), have gained significant popularity. These certifications promote sustainable building design, construction, and operation, encouraging the use of energy-efficient materials, renewable energy sources, and environmentally friendly construction practices. The increasing adoption of green building certifications is driving the construction industry towards more sustainable practices.

Net-zero energy buildings are designed to produce as much energy as they consume over a year. These buildings incorporate energy-efficient design, on-site renewable energy generation, and smart energy management systems. With advancements in technology and increased emphasis on energy conservation, net-zero energy buildings are becoming more feasible and cost-effective. The construction industry is increasingly embracing the concept of net-zero energy buildings to reduce its carbon footprint.

The construction industry is notorious for generating significant amounts of waste. However, the concept of a circular economy is gaining traction, focusing on reducing waste, reusing materials, and recycling construction and demolition waste. Through innovative practices like modular construction, prefabrication, and the use of reclaimed materials, the industry is transitioning towards a more circular and sustainable approach, minimising waste generation and promoting resource efficiency.
